Carmel Valley’s Premier Shopping Center awards $45,000 to Just in Time for Foster Youth
San Diego, CA December 27, 2023 – Del Mar Highlands Town Center (DMHTC) has partnered with Just in Time for Foster Youth (JIT) to empower young adults ages 18-26 to reach their educational dreams. DMHTC’s investment of $45,000 in JIT’s College Bound service will support over 150 transition age foster youth to launch their college journeys and make it all the way to graduation and beyond.
For youth who have been impacted by foster care, only 10% enroll in college and less than 6% graduate. JIT is challenging those statistics having served over 850 College Bound participants with a consistent success rate of 77%. In addition, JIT has awarded scholarships for advanced degrees to over 52 scholars with a 100% graduation rate.
The key to this success is the comprehensive, community-based model of College Bound. While JIT provides laptops, printers, school, and dorm supplies, they have seen that it takes much more to attain a college degree. Loving and healthy families diligently prepare their children for college and then stay closely connected to them as they pursue their education, offering guidance, helping whenever challenges arise, and, perhaps most important of all, believing in their success. This is why JIT mobilizes the entire San Diego Community, including 150 community partners, 600 volunteers, and over 45 staff members with lived experience in foster care to create an ecosystem of wholistic support.
As JIT Chief Empowerment Officer, Don Wells, puts it, “We’ve found that the proven path to our intended outcomes requires the essential resources and reliable supportive relationships that help our participants enter college ready to compete, stay in school with growing confidence, and ultimately take ownership for their academic success to reach graduation.”
“At First Washington Realty, we believe in the potential of every young individual and recognize the crucial role education plays in shaping their futures. Our commitment to enhancing the lives of transition-age foster youth through Just in Time for Foster Youth aligns with our belief in creating positive change in the communities where we live and operate. By supporting their college journey, we hope to contribute to the development of resilient, empowered individuals who will go on to make a lasting impact in their communities,” said Mary Rottler, Chief Operating Officer at First Washington Realty.
